Flash Fiction 003 – Micro Fiction

By now, if you’ve been keeping up with my posts, you’re aware of what flash fiction is. These kinds of stories are short and succinct. But what if you made the stories even shorter? No more paragraphs, only a few sentences at most. This is where we enter the realm of micro fiction. Every week over on the subreddit r/fantasywriters, there is a thread dedicated to themed stories written in fifty words or fewer. On occasion, I have tried my hand at such a challenge. So, this week, I’m showcasing a few micro fiction pieces. Enjoy!

Witch

The room had gone quiet, but the work had not yet finished. The victim remained in his bed, the scarlet innards vibrant against the grey flesh. Her hands toyed with them until the heart came loose. With a word she ignited. The heart burned into nothing. He sat up.

Hero

The door caved in with a hard kick. His sword radiated gold heat as he held it high. The undead thrall looked on with vacant eyes and mouth agape. Its head came free with one swing. The necromancer screamed as the blade for her next. Bloody ash, she crumbled.

Wand

He held it outstretched, the tip pointed between naive green eyes. He only needed two words; simple, lethal, exquisite things. He had said them so many times, twice that night alone. Dazzling emerald shot from his wand with the words, but the color turned tail and found him instead.

Gnome

The trees spoke of peace in the little villages. The small people living in them went about their days tinkering and talking with the wildlife. “A gnome’s life is a simple life.” Then the clouds shrouded the sun, and gloom fell. Villages razed, the marked child dancing in the flames.
